London Fashion Week Men’s Designer Showrooms This January, The Store Studios at 180 The Strand once again played host to London Fashion Week’s Designer Showrooms. Alongside the runways, the exhibition space provided an opportunity for Britain’s best up-and-coming design talent to showcase their Fall/Winter 2018-19 collections. ‘Discovery’ was the overarching theme of the event with the DiscoveryLAB zone highlighting the innovative, experimental explorations in design that the London menswear scene is so renowned for. A visual installation by J. JS Lee and graphic flyposter art works produced in collaboration with the exhibiting brands created a truly immersive experience. Visiting Scandinavian brand Tonsure were among those utilising the DiscoveryLAB, officially introducing the label to a London audience. An interactive presentation inspired by 1980s New York, featuring dynamic projections of a journey through a digital cityscape was the backdrop for a collection that reinvented jersey staples in tactile Merino wool, leather and through the use of knitted constructions. Every Second Counts x Kazuki Karaishi Performance-led activewear brand Every Second Counts teamed up with apparel and accessories designer Kazuki Karaishi for their first collaborative collection of sportswear/streetwear hybrids. A fusion of fashion and function that focuses on both construction and comfort, the collection centres around the growing trend for mixing gym wear into the everyday wardrobe to bring a fresh approach to the sportswear market. Léon Bara Taking inspiration from Japanese garments and the tattoo motifs of the Yakuza, Léon Bara’s Fall Winter collection blends traditional craftsmanship with refined utilitarianism. Waterproof-coated fabrics and resilient, multifunctional pieces, such as their innovative vest/tote bag hybrids, add a high performance, progressive aspect to contemporary menswear design. Ka Wa Key Ka Wa Key’s latest collection encapsulates the season’s focus on the tactile and the textural. Combining traditional textile crafts with the latest in fashion technology, burn-out techniques produced a cloudy effect that further softened oversized puffa coats while coated treatments applied to plush fur fabrications created a feather-like sheen. An east-meets-west, masculine/feminine aesthetic taps into the hybrid trend running throughout F/W18-19. Gloverall Showing both their signature and seasonal collections, Gloverall’s collection of outerwear celebrated the brand’s heritage while introducing contemporary updates to their classic 1950s and 1960s inspired silhouettes. Fabrications were key, with chunky corduroy, British tweed and cosy boiled wool bringing an tactile appeal to their range of duffle coats and trenches. Kirstie Maclaren London based jeweller Kirstie Maclaren showcased her minimalist aesthetic with a collection of ‘miniature architecture’, featuring pendant necklaces, bangles and rings. Inspired by the geometry of the city’s buildings and the luxuriousness of the Art Deco movement, each highly polished piece is made by hand to create wearable modern classics.
